Chapter 7-Queer Lodgings The party is dropped of at a giant rock called the Carrock by the eagles, and continue their dangerous journey. Gandalf goes to the skin-changer's house, Beorn. Beorn is called the skin changer because he can change into a bear. Beorn invites the party in for dinner, and as they were eating, he told them stories about Mirkwood. As they are preparing to go to bed, Gandalf warns them that they must not go outside until morning. During the night, Bilbo hears a noise outside and wonders if it is Beorn in the form of a bear. The next morning Beorn is not there and at nightime, Beorn says that the journey the dwarves, Gandalf, and Bilbo all speak of is true. Then Beorn provides food, water, and clothing to the dwarves and Bilbo for the journey through Mirekwood. When Beorn is bidding the party farewell Gandalf leaves and tells the rest of the party to stay on the path. |
